Feature article

I haven't made a solid decision yet on what I'm going to do for this project yet. I am thinking about a couple of different topics at this point and trying to do some research to decide which one would be the most interesting... One topic I am interested in is the expanding technology market in the cell phone industry... I worked for Verizon for several years in the past and as such still have many connections in the industry.. one of them told me that within a few years they won't be selling phones anymore, only service and it will be like the iron man thing where you can manipulate the air to make calls, do web searches, and send written communication... So while it seems interesting, I am not sure about the available information on it. Another topic I am looming into is the science of teaching babies to use sign language to communicate. Some studies demonstrate that infants sign in their own language on their own while others say its bad to sign with your baby because it delays speech.  I'm not sure if it will be one of these topics I will end up writing about or something in between, found while researching one of these topics. So well see where I end up with it...

  1. I was actually thinking about how rapidly cell phone technology and aesthetics have progressed just the other day. About seven years ago, I was ecstatic to be one of the first to own a hot pink Motorola Razr. It had a camera, a calendar, a timer, and even solitaire! Back then, the technology was baffling; but now only a few years later, the Razr is completely obsolete. I don’t even think that they give them away with cell phone plans anymore. Phones these days can navigate you anywhere, connect you with social networking, keep your schedule on track, and even tell you a joke. Apple has seemed to spearhead this movement with the iPhone, and it would be really interesting to write about the evolution of Apple products. I enjoyed the SNB you wrote about babies’ cries mimicking their mothers’ native language, so I think writing something of a similar genre would also work well with your writing style.

  2. I rather like the idea of the cell phones. I'm kinda a geek like that and the idea that technology is progressing faster than we can really know what to do with it, I think that's just bad ass... I say run with that... See what the geeks in WIRED are writing about. I'm sure that even though a lot of this stuff is hypothetical, it can't be that far off into the future...

  3. I hope you chose to write about your cellphone topic, I find it extremely interesting. I have done research on the amount of "cellphone time" people are accumulating, and it's increasing at an ever growing rate. Cellphones really have become a vital part of our everyday lives, I would know I'm attached at the hip with mine!

  4. The cellphone topic would be cool to read!! Everytime I see the IronMan movies, I just hope the technology is coming soon. We already have available to us keyboards that are projected onto desktops, so it makes sense that computers/phones will all have a HUD (heads up display).

Sign-language for babies would be cool also. Its truly easier to teach languages either spoken or by signing, when we are young. Both my girls knew the sign for food/hungry before they could talk. Basic signs are used all the time, there isn't any reason why little ones couldn't learn more complex signs. I wouldn't say it delays speech, most people that use signing with babies, also talk to them at the same time. My experience is that it helped.

Good ideas, I know this is late, but will be cool to see what you picked.
